KARL MANCHESTER

Karl L. Manchester, 91, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2022 at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Des Moines, IA to parents Verne and Alice Manchester. Growing up, he worked at his father’s Texaco station while attending East High School. In 1949, he met Dixie Davis, his bride of 72 years. He attended Drake University but interrupte­d his studies to serve in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He completed his Actuarial Science degree and graduated with honors in 1954. As a successful executive, Karl made a positive impact on the life insurance industry as well as the lives of many agents. He began his career at Equitable Life in Des Moines, IA before heading south to join Southland Life in Dallas, TX where he later returned to after spending several years at Bowles and Tillinghas­t Consulting in Atlanta, GA. The family moved to Houston when Karl had an opportunit­y to join Great Southern Life where he later became president in 1981. In 1984, he cofounded Columbia Universal Life in Austin, TX and served as president until his retirement. Karl served in many profession­al and charitable organizati­ons, and was respected for his integrity, honesty, and work ethic. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Beverly, and eldest son, Craig. He is survived by his wife, Dixie, and their children Mike Manchester and wife Judy, Lori Green, and Lisa Schroeder; 15 grandchild­ren and 11 great grandchild­ren, all of whom he loved dearly. Karl valued education and provided a path for all his grandchild­ren to attend college.

The most important things in Karl’s life were his faith in God, his love for Dixie, and his family. He enjoyed traveling with Dixie, playing tennis and golf, doing his daily puzzle, and drinking his 5:30 red wine. A family graveside service will be held followed by a celebratio­n of his life.
