Yankees take two from Guardians
CLEVELAND — Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton hit consecutive homers, Nestor Cortes shut Cleveland down for six innings and the New York Yankees continued their torrid pace by beating the Guardians 6-1 to complete a doubleheader sweep Saturday.
Matt Carpenter homered twice in New York’s 13-4 romp in the opener.
At 58-21, New York has the second-best record after 79 games of any team in 93 years. Only the 1998 Yankees (59-20) were better.
Dodgers 7, Padres 2: Freddie Freeman, Will Smith and Justin Turner homered during a seven-pitch span in the first inning, Tyler Anderson struck out six and Los Angeles won at home.
Cardinals 7, Phillies 6: Nolan Arenado sparked a record barrage of four straight home runs by St. Louis in the first inning, then hit a tie-breaking drive in the ninth that sent the Cardinals to victory at Philadelphia.
Rangers 7, Mets 3: Kole Calhoun homered twice and drove in four runs, Martin Perez won his seventh straight decision and Texas won at New York.
White Sox 5, Giants 3: Gavin Sheets drove in two runs, and Chicago held on for a win at San Francisco.
Braves 4, Reds 1: Spencer Strider allowed one hit over six innings and matched a career high with 11 strikeouts, and Atlanta won at Cincinnati.
Rays sweep Blue Jays: Francisco Mejia homered twice, Isaac Paredes had three hits and five RBIs and Tampa Bay swept a doubleheader at Toronto. The Rays won the first game 6-2 and the second 11-5.
Cubs 3, Red Sox 1: Mark Leiter Jr. allowed one run on three hits in 51⁄3 innings in Chicago’s win at home.
Twins 4, Orioles 3: Jorge Polanco hit a tying homer and Jose Miranda delivered a game-ending single as Minnesota rallied in the bottom of the ninth to win.
Pirates 7, Brewers 4: Michael Chavis and Oneil Cruz homered and Bryse Wilson pitched six strong innings as host Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee.
Mariners 2, Athletics 1: Abraham Toro singled home the winning run in the ninth to lift host Seattle.
Marlins 5, Nationals 3: Jesus Aguilar hit a two-run home run and Miami won at Washington.
Tigers 4, Royals 3: Victor Reyes and Riley Greene hit homered in the ninth to give Detroit a win at home.
Rockies 11, Diamondbacks 7: Connor Joe had a three-run triple and Brendan Rodgers hit a three-run homer and Colorado won at home. Christian Walker had two homers for Arizona.
