ANNA JOHNSON HINKLEY

Anna Hinkley, a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmothe­r and great grandmothe­r passed away on July 2, 2022.

Anna was born on April 6, 1930 in Lakeland, Florida and grew up in Miami. Her paternal grandparen­ts were pioneers in the Florida orange grove business in the late 1800’s. When she was in fifth grade, she met an equally smart and charming little boy, Ed, who would become her childhood sweetheart.

She asked him to their first date on a hay ride at age 16 and married him in 1951. Anna graduated from Miami Edison High School where she was a member of the Marching Cadets. After high school, she pursued a degree in education at Florida State University where she also performed as an aerialist in the FSU Circus’ Redheads on Revue.

Anna earned her bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Florida a Master’s degree from Barry College and had a very successful career as an educator in elementary, high school, and college levels. Her passion was teaching young children to read and also specialize­d in remedial reading for older children and adults. Through her many years of dedicated teaching, she helped hundreds of children and young adults enrich their lives through reading.

Anna and Ed raised their two children in North Miami but would also live in Tampa, Marco Island and Coral Gables, Florida. She enjoyed gardening, playing tennis, oil and watercolor painting, and especially doing the fine art of needlepoin­t. She loved cats and you would often find one curled up in her lap. Anna and Ed loved to take guided tours and cruises all over the US, Canada and Caribbean. In 1997 she and Ed left Florida for their new home in Houston to be close to her children and grandchild­ren. They have lived at Eagle’s Trace retirement community in west Houston for the past 12 years.

Anna was an active member of the Bridge Builder’s Sunday school class at Memorial Drive Methodist church. She enjoyed working as a volunteer for many years at Memorial City Hospital, prepared sandwiches for the needy at the church, and helped with various assistance programs at Eagle’s Trace.

Anna was a devoted and loving wife and mother and always put her family first. She was selfless in her desire to give her children the love and support they needed to become kind adults and loving parents. Anna had a great dispositio­n, and positive attitude about life. She was a hard worker and her many accomplish­ments set a great example especially for the women and men in her family. Her memory will be cherished for generation­s to come.

Anna is survived by her childhood sweetheart and devoted husband of 70 years C. Edward Hinkley, daughter Carol Cornette and son Richard Hinkley and his partner Carrie Gillespie; grandchild­ren, Fr Richard R. Hinkley, Brian Cornette and wife Ying, Hayley van Wageningen and husband Jeff, and Lisa Griggs and Husband Hayden; great-grandchild­ren, Mitchell and Holden van Wageningen and Valencia and Maximillia­n Cornette, Marley Griggs, and the extended Silvia Hinkley/ Fernandez family.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebratio­n of Life Memorial Service to be held at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive, on Thursday July 14 at 2:00 PM. For those desiring, the family requests with gratitude that in lieu of flowers, contributi­ons be made in Anna’s memory to the charity of their choice.
