JAYNE PEER SMITH

September 4, 1930 - June 29, 2022

-

Jayne P. Smith of Conroe, Texas, entered the Church Triumphant on June 29, 2022, at the age of 91, having been a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a lifelong disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, church musician and singer, as well as a Certified Professional Landman in the oil business, one of the first women in the field.

Jayne was born on September 4, 1930 in Oklahoma City to Gearald A. Peer and Vivienne Buxton Peer. She graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City and attended Oklahoma State University and the American Conservatory for Music in Chicago. She married Jay Hamilton Smith (1933 1998) at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Oklahoma City on August 25, 1956.

During her many years working with her husband, Jay Hamilton Smith, in their oil company, Jayco Resources, Inc., she traveled to most counties in Texas and several other states. She had many colorful stories to tell as “Calamity Jayne,” but all the while successfully gained the trust of land/mineral rights owners and obtained their leases. Jayne was trusted for her impeccable, productive work for their oil company clients and made lasting friends everywhere.

As an outstanding mezzosoprano in her younger years, she was a professional singer in church choirs and was a featured soloist with large choruses with orchestras, including with the Mexico City Symphony (performing the solos in Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, cantata for mezzosoprano, mixed chorus, and orchestra), as well as soloist with the Texas All State Choir.

Whether singing in church choirs, serving as a Stephen’s Minister for her church, Trinity Episcopal in The Woodlands, or working in her business, Jayne was well-loved. Most importantly, she was a faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ and has left a powerful spiritual legacy. She is survived by her daughter, Sherryl Smith Pond, Sherryl’s husband Dennis Pond, and three grandchildren: Thomas Hamilton Babbitt, his wife Michelle and their son John Thomas Babbitt, granddaughter Katherine Lydia Babbitt and her son Christopher Skipper, and grandson Nicholas Sargent Babbitt, his wife Rowan Babbitt, and their sons Stirling Babbitt and Marius Babbitt.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 16th, 2022, 10:30 in the morning at HopePointe Anglican Church, 3333 South Panther Creek Dr., The Woodlands, TX 77381. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to

“The Master Works” performing arts series.
