DOROTHY “DOT” FOSTER POWELL

Dorothy “Dot” Foster Powell ended her earthly pilgrimage and began her eternal life on July 1, 2022, at the age of 97.

She was born in Spartanbur­g, SC to Holland Dean and Julia Foster. She attended Converse College, where she majored in social work. While there, she met the love of her life, a young fighter pilot in training, Richard Gordon Powell. A war time romance ensued, and they were married August 19, 1945. They would have 37 beautiful years together. After living in New York and Indiana, the Powell family settled in Houston, Texas where Dorothy resided for the last 58 years.

She was a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, where she was one of the first teachers at the School for Little People. At one point, she was a member of four different PTA’s. She volunteere­d for many years at Memorial Area Ministries, MAM, and she was a crack bridge player having played in many groups over the years.

Dorothy is survived by her four daughters, Barbara Sparkman and husband Robert, Jan Suhr, Julie Vanderslic­e and husband Alan,

Betsy Bixby and husband David. She was blessed with 11 grandchild­ren, Trey, Andy, Emily, Brannon, Courtney, Judge, Rob, Jessica, Alexis, Her family will remember her gracious spirit and joy of life exhibited by her favorite expression, “My cup runneth over and I’m drinking from the saucer!” “Her children arise and call her blessed.” Proverbs 31:28

A family graveside service will be held at Memorial Oaks on July 13.
