You can still stave off the push to use Microsoft Edge

-

Q. There is a website I visit often that requires Internet Explorer, but my computer keeps pushing me to Microsoft Edge. What can I do to fix this?

A. Microsoft Edge has a feature known as IE Mode that allows the Edge browser to interact with websites just like Internet Explorer.

To activate this, open up Edge and click the settings icon in the upper right corner. It’s the icon that looks like 3 dots in a row. Select Settings in the menu that drops down.

Next, click on Default Browser in the left column.

In the Internet Explorer compatibility section, you can change the setting for Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer from Default to Allow. With this set, if a site requires Internet Explorer for compatibility, you can choose to reload it in Internet Explorer mode.

This should keep the site functional for you after Internet Explorer is gone.

You might also just want to try visiting the website using Chrome or Firefox as it may work just fine using one of those browsers.

Q. Many times, when I visit a Web page that requires me to sign in, I will get a message that says Access denied and that I don’t have permissions to access it. Can you tell me what is going on?

A. Websites that require a secure sign in before being accessed can be very finicky at times.

The most common cause for this kind of behavior is when the customer bookmarks a page that is accessed after logging in.

By example, you may access your bank at bank.com, but you bookmark a page that comes up after you sign in. Something like bank.com/ accounts or similar. That will cause the error you are seeing.

I would recommend that you edit your bookmarks to take you to the main website rather than one of the internal pages. That should clear things up.
