Lewis E. Gammon completed what he called his “journey down the road of life”. Lewis was an incredible man inspiring us all with his character, lifetime devotion and service to friends, family, faith and country by participating purposefully in these pillars of life.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial will be held on August 13, 2022 at 10:30am in the sanctuary at St. Luke’s Gethsemene United Methodist Church, 6856 Bellaire Blvd., Houston 77074. Lewis passed away on April 30 a few month’s shy of his birthday and the family decided to keep his centennial birthdate weekend special. Internment with military honors was held May 18 at Houston National Cemetery.

Lewis was born in Richmond, Virginia and married his high school sweetheart, Sara Cogle. Together they shared their journey for 72 years, 7 months, 14 days. As a World War II veteran, Lewis was part of the Headquarters 385th Field Artillery Battalion, 104th Infantry “Timberwolf Division” from 1943 to 1945, receiving a Purple Heart and several other honors including the French Legion of Honor.

After World War II ended, Lewis and Sara moved to Bakersfield, California where he dedicated his career to the Southern Pacific Railroad ultimately rising to Chief Special Agent in San Francisco. Following frequent moves as his career progressed, Lewis and Sara always found purpose to be involved with their faith and community.

After retirement in Houston to be close to family, Lewis stayed connected to his pillars of life, volunteering to meaningful organizations in his community. At the age of 88 Lewis was the first recognized volunteer of Houston reVision at St. Luke’s Gethsemene United Methodist Church, a program designed to help at-risk youth. Lewis’ dedicated involvement included connecting, listening, and coaching youth to better construct their roads to a successful life.

Lewis’s grandchildren were also inspired, and in their words noted “Grandpa has been an incredible influence on how we live and look at life”, knowing by heart Lewis’s quote, “Life is a journey on a road that is always under construction.”

Lewis was preceded in death by his wife Sara and daughter Carolyn Ann. He is survived by daughters and families, Susan Hennig (Greg) and Janet Wildgen (Kevin) and five grandchildren Shanna, Michael, Blake, Kent and Claire, as well as two great-grandchildren, Elodie and Alice.

In lieu of flowers, family would appreciate a memorial donation be made to Houston reVision. Please note in honor of Lewis Gammon in comments at www.houstonrevision.org/donate
