To fix file download issue, delete old program

- Jay Lee

Q. Several friends and I went on a trip and took lots of photos which we AirDropped to each other. My intent was to create a photo album of many of these photos. However, many of these AirDropped photos are sitting on my iPhone 8 and in my iCloud.com photo library as Live Photos.

It seemed easiest to download photos from iCloud directly into a folder on my Windows laptop. However, when I do that, iCloud sends them down in a WinZip file. I no longer have an active WinZip account because WinZip frequently releases upgrades that they want you to buy. In any case, I do not want the Live Photo, I want a jpeg/jpg file.

Do you have any suggested solutions?

A. The iPhone has a feature called Live Photo. When this is enabled, it creates a still image and a short video with motion and sound.

When this is uploaded to iCloud, it sends the still image and the short video. When you attempt to download it, iCloud puts both files into a single Zip archive for you.

The problem you are experiencing is caused by an unlicensed version of WinZip installed on your PC.

Computer users of a certain age relied heavily on programs like WinZip to manage compressed archives and it used to be a requirement.

But when Windows 7 was released, it quietly included a Zip file compression utility built into the operating system which is still present in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

With this functionality built in, there was no longer a need for applications like WinZip unless you needed the more advanced compression features.

To solve your problem, just uninstall WinZip and reboot. Then you can just click on a

Zip file and see the contentsand unzip them right in File Explorer. You’ll see the video file and the still image.

If you do decide you need an advanced compression utility, take a look at 7-Zip from 7zip.org. It’s a fully featured compression utility and, best of all, it’s free.

Q. If I plug my monitor into the HDMI port on my Dell desktop PC running Windows 10 all I get is my computer background with no icons or Taskbar. I have been using the VGA port as well, but I want the features of the HDMI connection.

A. Based on what you are describing, it sounds like you may have both the VGA and the HDMI port connected simultaneously.

This is causing the computer to see the one monitor as two monitors and it is not able to send output to the display properly.

To fix this problem I recommend that you unplug the VGA cable and use the HDMI as the only connection to the computer.

This should sort things out.
