Putin’s latest pawn
Griner’s prison sentence
Regarding “Thumbs: Ted Cruz bigfoots FBI with boot-scootin’ BS. Come and take him, please,” (Aug. 6): The front page of the Houston Chronicle announced “Griner’s sentence raises pressure on Biden.” Really? Excuse my understanding of the law, but Brittney Griner was caught with drugs in a Russian airport and got thrown in jail. Are Americans so entitled that they think they are above the law throughout the world? Is Griner so dull-witted that she is unaware of the strained relationships between the United States and Russia? If Griner feels like a Putin pawn, she is. So, Griner’s problem is now President Joe Biden’s problem. I’m sure the president has an open agenda to deal with one woman’s knuckleheaded, thoughtless actions. She hurt the WNBA, her family and any chance of getting other captive Americans out of Russian prisons.

Regarding “Solomon: Cheering Brittney Griner’s prison sentence is unAmerican,” (Aug. 4): I join Jerome Solomon’s deploring of the negative remarks that have apparently been leveled by her fellow Americans. Such remarks and her mistreatment at the hands of Russian authorities are deplorable. Griner’s sexual orientation and choice of partners is nobody’s business but her own and her partner’s. The Biden administration should do whatever is necessary to secure her release. Fellow Americans of every party and persuasion should support those efforts and welcome this fellow Houstonian and fellow American when she returns to our city.
