Tomato Diseases

Early blight and septoria are two leaf-spot diseases that affect the leaves, stems and fruit of tomato plants. Plants can be infected with both at the same time.

SEPTORIA

■ Small leaf spots

(less than 1/8 inch in diameter)

■ Disease spreads upward from oldest to youngest growth.

■ Spots have a dark edge and a tan or gray center

■ Most common in highhumidi­ty conditions

EARLY BLIGHT

■ Disease infects leaves, stems and fruit

■ Disease spreads upward from oldest to youngest growth.

■ Black, leathery spots on fruit often surrounded by yellow tissue

■ Sunken dark, round stem lesions form with concentric circles inside

■ Occurs in warm, wet weather conditions
