Regarding “College Applications,” (Aug. 16): I question whether Lewis Homburg actually read the article in question, “Opinion: Applying to college? Make sure to check the state’s abortion laws first.” He doesn’t find it horrible that a little over 1 in 4 female undergraduate students experience sexual assault, nor that 15 percent of female undergraduates at UT Austin reported they’d been raped? He isn’t upset that 60 percent of student single mothers live at or below the poverty line? Based on his words, the only thing he found sad was that this “obviously intelligent young woman” is thinking ahead to what she might need to do if she becomes one of those statistics? I find that very sad. Jean Tanner, Houston Regarding “New Texas law has ‘In God We Trust’ signs popping up on campus as school begins,” (Aug. 17): “In God We Trust,” but remove Bibles from school libraries (see “Texas ISD pulls Bible from schools, announces sweeping book removals after months-long review process”). They might be a bad influence on our children. What hypocrites we have become. Christine Eheman, Houston
