Happy Birthday Alex. This should have been your thirtysecond birthday but almost nine years ago you died from a Massive Pulmonary Embolism caused by your birth control pills. As many as two thousand women in the US alone die every year from this cause. The drug industry is indifferent to this death toll, but in your name we continue to fight on to inform the public about the risks of these drugs. This year the Foundation will have spent one million dollars total on raising awareness. We are now extensively mobilizing social media to reach out to young women across America. In addition, your Foundation’s strong partnership with the University of Houston is encouraging creative writing via internships and writing festivals. This year should mark a total of one hundred internships awarded.

Nine years is such a long time to be without you. The pain never goes away, and we think of you every single day. Keep taking notes, making tea, and giving hugs. All our love, Mum and Dad.
