Cole’s frustration shows amid slide
NEW YORK — Yankees ace Gerrit Cole twice banged on the dugout roof, shouting in frustration and getting booed as the scuffling New York Yankees lost for the 15th time in 19 games, beaten 5-2 by the Toronto Blue
Jays on Saturday.
The AL East-leading Yankees fell to 9-20 since entering the All-Star break with a 64-28 record. After holding a 15½-game bulge on July 8, their margin over second-place Toronto is down to seven games.
The Yankees have lost six straight series for the first time since 1995, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Cole (9-6) hadn’t allowed a hit before the Blue Jays scored four times in the fifth. After he issued a walk and misplayed a grounder, Alejandro Kirk capped the burst with a two-run double.
Phillies split with Mets: Bailey Falter threw six innings of two-hit ball, Kyle Schwarber tripled and doubled, and Philadelphia beat visiting New York to earn a split of a doubleheader. In the opener, Starling Marte had three hits as the Mets won 8-2.
Dodgers 7, Marlins 0: Dustin May dominated for five innings, Will Smith and Justin Turner hit three-run homers and Los Angeles rolled at home.
Cubs 6, Brewers 5 (11): Willson Contreras hit an
RBI single to cap a two-run rally in the 11th inning and host Chicago beat Milwaukee for a fifth straight win.
Rays 5, Royals 2: Drew Rasmussen took a no-hit try into the sixth inning and Tampa Bay won at home.
White Sox 2, Guardians 0: Johnny Cueto scattered five hits over 8 2⁄3 innings and Jose Abreu had an RBI double, sending Chicago to a win at Cleveland.
Cardinals 16, Diamondbacks 7: Albert Pujols blasted two more homers, pushing his career total to 692 and helping St. Louis win at Arizona.
Red Sox 4, Orioles 3: Kike Hernandez homered and Michael Wacha pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning as Boston won at Baltimore.
Rangers 4, Twins 3 (10): Corey Seager hit a goahead single in the 10th to lead visiting Texas to a win.
Reds 10, Pirates 1: Jake Fraley’s two-run home run highlighted a four-run outburst in the fourth inning as Cincinnati routed host Pittsburgh.
Athletics 4, Mariners 3 (10): Tony Kemp scored the winning run after pitcher Diego Castillo mishandled a high chopper in the 10th as Oakland won at home.
Padres 2, Nationals 1: Juan Soto and Josh Bell homered against their former team in San Diego’s win.
Rockies 4, Giants 3 (10): Brendan Rodgers drove in Wynton Bernard with his fourth hit of the game, and Colorado won at Denver.
Tigers 4, Angels 3: Tyler Alexander pitched six strong innings in a win over Los Angeles at Detroit.
