AGGIES NAME KING STARTER
Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher has pegged sophomore Haynes King (above) as his starting quarterback for the opener against Sam Houston at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kyle Field, according to multiple program insiders.
King beat out junior Max Johnson, a transfer from LSU, and true freshman Conner Weigman from Bridgeland High in one of the most trumpeted quarterback battles at A&M in years.
“All three quarterbacks are playing well,” Fisher said Wednesday in declining to publicly name a starter at that time.
King also won the starting job a year ago over Zach Calzada before breaking his leg in Week 2 against Colorado in Denver.
He did not play the rest of the season, and Calzada has since transferred to Auburn after leading the Aggies to an 8-4 record. No. 6 A&M opens with Sam Houston and Appalachian State (Sept. 10) at Kyle Field before also hosting No. 16 Miami on
Sept. 17. The Aggies open SEC play against Arkansas in Arlington’s AT&T Stadium on Sept. 24.
