Kansas State routs Missouri to reach 2-0

-

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Deuce Vaughn ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns, the Kansas State defense picked off Missouri on four straight possessions in the second half, and the Wildcats blew out the Tigers 40-12 on Saturday in the first meeting of old Big 12 rivals in more than a decade.

Adrian Martinez added 101 yards passing while running for a touchdown, and Phillip Brooks returned a punt 76 yards for another score, as the Wildcats (2-0) weathered a long lightning delay to finish off a dominant performance.

They picked off Brady Cook twice in the second half, then did the same to backup Jack Abraham, before Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz put his starter back in for the fourth quarter. But by that point, the Wildcats had extended their lead to 33-6 and the only drama left was whether they would keep the Tigers (1-1) out of the end zone.

The Tigers finally got in on the game’s final play, thanks to an untimed down because of a penalty.

Vaughn and D.J. Giddens tacked on touchdown runs to put away the Wildcats’ longtime rival.

NO. 7 OKLAHOMA 33 KENT STATE 3

Marvin Mims caught seven passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns to help the Sooners overcome a slow start in a victory over the Golden Flashes in Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma (2-0) was scoreless and trailed Kent State (0-2) as late as the final minute of the first half before Mims played key roles on touchdown drives to end the half and start the second. That helped the Sooners move to 4-0 against current Mid-American Conference teams.

TCU 59, TARLETON STATE 17

Max Duggan completed 23 of 29 passes for 390 yards and five touchdowns as TCU won its home opener over lowerdivision Tarleton State on Saturday night, making Sonny Dykes the first new Horned Frogs coach to win his first two games since Dutch Meyer in 1934.

Duggan set career highs for yards and TDs while playing less than three full quarters in his 30th career start for the Frogs (2-0). It came a week after former Oklahoma transfer Chandler Morris started their season-opening 38-13 win at Colorado before suffering a sprained left knee late in that game.

NO. 11 OKLAHOMA STATE 34 ARIZONA STATE 17

Spencer Sanders passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and No. 11 Oklahoma State defeated visiting Arizona State.

Sanders passed for 268 yards and ran for 54, and Dominic Richardson ran for 131 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 44 yards for the Cowboys (2-0).

Emory Jones passed for 223 yards and a touchdown and Xazavian Valladay rushed for 118 yards and a score for Arizona State (1-1).

IOWA STATE 10, IOWA 7

Xavier Hutchinson caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Dekkers in the fourth quarter, completing a 99-yard drive to lead the Cyclones past the Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa.

The 21-play possession that started in the third quarter took 11 minutes, 49 seconds off the clock, and helped Iowa State (2-0) end a six-game losing streak to Iowa (1-1).

Iowa State survived three turnovers and two blocked punts to gain their first road victory in the in-state rivalry since 2014.
