Lamar remembers lost teammate
The Lamar football program took the field with heavy hearts Friday at Delmar Stadium.
The coaches and fans wore purple shirts with “Lamar” printed across the front in remembrance of David Harris, a player in the program who died Sept. 9 of unknown natural causes. The school sold the shirts for $10 each with the proceeds going directly to Harris’ family.
“David Harris was a junior, he was a defensive back, and he was a future engineer,” Lamar coach Michael Lindsey said. “David was an awesome kid. He was a leader in school, and everybody loved him. He was always smiling, always positive, always upbeat. He passed away last Friday, and our hearts are heavy. We’re wearing purple because that was his favorite color. We went to Lanier Middle School, which is purple. We’re going to miss him.”
Lindsey said the community has been pouring out its support for Harris’ family since his passing. That continued Friday as those purple shirts littered the bleachers and home sideline.
“That’s just Lamar, and David was a big part of Lamar,” Lindsey said. “We’re a tight community. The kids initiated a lot of the things that we did tonight as far as the color purple and some of the other things we did at school. I’m thankful to be part of a community like that and that we’re able to support his family through this.”
On the field, the Texans took care of business and snapped a two-game losing streak in their final nondistrict tuneup, rolling to a 35-7 victory over Dobie.
Lamar quarterback Kenneth Rosenthal had a pair of touchdown passes to Jadon Garza and T.J. Rone, and running backs Brandon Thomas, Kelton Weathers and Jordan Reaves all found the end zone.
