New Caney makes historic statement

- Jim McCurdy

New Caney picked the right time to make history.

The Eagles scored with less than two minutes remaining to defeat The Woodlands 14-7 in District 13-6A action Friday night at Randall Reed Stadium. It marked the program’s first win against the Highlanders after entering the night 0-10.

“We came out here and said we were going to make a statement,” said New Caney running back Kedrick Reescano, who rushed for 119 yards. “That’s what we came out here to do. Every single week, we’re going to keep grinding.”

Eric Sanchez caught a 35-yard touchdown from Nehemiah Broussard with 1:29 to go to give New Caney (4-0, 2-0) its first lead. That would be enough as the Eagles held on and handed The Woodlands (2-2, 1-1) its first district loss since 2020.
