Delivering energy with purpose

As the energy capital of the world, nearly every segment of the energy industry is headquartered in Houston. It should come as no surprise then that one of North America’s leading energy infrastructure companies has planted roots here as well.

The Sempra family of companies provide energy to more than 40 million consumers – more than any other U.S. utility. In Texas, the Sempra organization is playing a key role in helping to deliver renewable energy to the state’s growing population while working to meet the increasing global demand for secure, lowercarbon natural gas through its Port Arthur liquefied natural gas (LNG) development project along Texas’ Gulf Coast. But it is the work the organization is doing in communities like Houston and Port Arthur that reveal how its 20,000 employees are delivering energy with purpose. Recently, we spoke with the company’s Chief Sustainability Officer to understand how the dedicated team at Sempra is helping to advance a better future for all.

“Sempra’s focus on sustainability is central to our strategy,” said Lisa Alexander, chief sustainability officer at Sempra. “Across our companies, we are working to help lift our communities while delivering energy to help enable the wellbeing and aspirations of the millions of consumers we serve.”

A better future for all

Sempra is building a strong regional presence through meaningful relationships. The company is committed to helping advance the global energy transition through its Texas investments while simultaneously lending a hand to organizations that have a shared commitment to help protect and preserve the environment.

“By focusing on programs that reduce or absorb carbon, restore or increase green urban spaces and rebuild critical habitats, Sempra is supporting communities in Houston and across Texas,” said Alexander.

Trees for Houston was a natural fit for Sempra. The organization’s work helps with carbon sequestration, flood mitigation, creating greenspaces for underserved communities and distributing trees into the community. In the last year, the Sempra team has helped plant 823 trees across Houston, helping to accelerate the organization’s mission to plant, protect and promote trees throughout the

Houston area.

With its easy distance from Sempra’s regional headquarters in Houston and its bold mission to preserve, restore and enhance the outdoor experience for all Houstonians, Memorial Park Conservancy is another group Sempra supports through employee volunteerism and financial contributions. Since 2021, Sempra has helped the organization care for the iconic gem’s vital environmental infrastructure and keep resilient ecologies healthy for Houston’s future generations.

In Port Arthur, the site of Sempra’s Port Arthur LNG project under development, it’s common to see a Sempra team volunteering. From the Galveston Bay Foundation, to supporting the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and Sea Rim State Park’s annual Kids Fish tournament in Sabine Pass, teams show up in force.

Most recently, volunteers from Sempra helped nearly 300 kids bait hooks, measure fish and return them back to the ocean.

Strengthening the Houston community

The company’s team in Houston, and everywhere Sempra has a presence, works to advance Sempra’s commitment to safety and sustainability. The company actively looks for opportunities for employees to roll up their sleeves and participate in campaigns and events to preserve and protect wildlife habitats, restore coastal beach and wetland areas, and support beautification efforts to sustain healthy and vibrant communities.

In Houston, these efforts are furthered through its ongoing support of many organizations and volunteer activities including Operation Homefront, Memorial Park Conservancy, Houston Food Bank, Houston Area Urban League, Greater Houston Black Chamber and more.

Investing in the future

From purpose-driven values to mindful community endeavors, Sempra is putting its energy behind Texas with an innovative mindset, generous spirit and an unwavering focus on advancing resilient, reliable, and affordable energy systems. With an inspiring mission to be North America’s premier energy infrastructure company, the team at Sempra is working every day to deliver energy with purpose.
