Thomas Allen Hill, age

81, of Houston, passed away peacefully on Monday, the 19th of September 2022. He was born on the 20th of August 1941, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, to James Raymond Hill and Mary Maurine Hill.

Growing up, Tom played golf competitively at the state level and worked at his family’s shoe store, Hill’s Shoes. After graduating from Ardmore High School, Tom attended the University of Oklahoma for undergraduate and graduate school and remained a lifelong fan of the OU Sooners. Upon leaving OU, he married the love of his life, Suzanne, and took a job with Exxon Corporation; he stayed with the company for his entire career until retirement in 1998. Over the years, his job sent them to Houston; Westport, Connecticut; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; and eventually back to Houston. Tom and Suzanne loved to travel and took many fabulous trips with both family and friends. Tom enjoyed sharing that love of travel with his family members and looked forward to annual pheasant hunting trips to South Dakota with friends, and later his sons-inlaw as well, for many years.

A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Tom loved his family and always had a smile and kind, encouraging words for them. He had a great sense of humor that never left him even as his health did. Wherever he and Suzanne traveled, they made friends and maintained these significant relationships through the decades. He was a big fan of country music and passed that love onto his daughters. A huge Astros fan, he and Suzanne shared a season ticket package with friends and always looked forward to attending games with the group. When not at the games, he made sure to catch them on TV. He was cherished dearly by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Tom enthusiastically participated in the lives of his daughters and his grandchildren as they grew up. He never missed his daughters’ performances or sporting events and was a familiar face to his daughters’ friends and their parents. As a grandfather, he loved attending Grandparents’ Day at the grandkids’ various schools and watching their sporting events and band concerts.

Actively involved in his community, Tom ushered regularly at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for many years until his health no longer allowed it. He volunteered on two committees for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and was known for providing brownies for his fellow volunteers. At the West University Community Center, he provided tax help to senior citizens every spring through AARP.

Tom is survived by his daughters, Cindy Hill Burnett and her husband Michael L. Burnett, and Melissa Hill Ochs and her husband Daniel E. Ochs; and grandchildren, Caroline, Emily, and John Burnett and Margaret, Katherine, and Thomas Ochs. Tom is preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Harder Hill, and his parents, Raymond and Maurine, and his sisters, Jimmie Joy Roberts and Nancy Gavin.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in his name be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601 or the charity of one’s choice.
