Herbert Murl Hall, lovingly known as “Pa,” passed away peacefully at his home in Houston, TX on August 20, 2022. He had just celebrated his 97th birthday weeks before with visits from his children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Nothing brought him more joy than being with his family.

Murl was born in New Boston, Texas, the youngest of five children, where he grew up on his family’s farm. Graduating from high school at the top of his class at age

16, he attended East Texas State University for a year before joining the US Navy. After three years of service, he suffered a back injury as an Aviation Ordnanceman and was sent to the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD where he received an honorary discharge from the Navy. He completed his education at Ben Franklin School of Accountancy in Washington D.C., now part of George Washington University. Upon graduation, Murl went to work at the U.S. Veterans Administration. It was at the V.A. where a beautiful, young, co-worker caught his eye, Margaret King. They were soon married and lived in D.C. until 1951 when

Murl accepted a job with the Department of the Treasury/ IRS in Houston, TX. After 30 years Murl retired as an Appeals Officer, but then joined his youngest daughter and her husband to work at their accounting firm, Nelson and Associates, for the next 30 years.

Murl loved his family and he lived life to the fullest as he and Margaret raised their three children. Never afraid to try something new, through the years he learned to square dance, bowl, garden, shoot pool, play Mahjong and even designed and built a new addition to their home after their third child was born. He also believed in giving his time to serve others. Whether it was volunteering to help prepare tax returns, assisting with fundraisers, helping lead Methodist Youth Fellowship or coaching youth baseball, he was happy to be involved. Forever young at heart, at the age of 90, he was jumping into swimming pools having cannonball contests with his great-grandchildren. He encouraged and supported his family in all their endeavors and was a wonderful example of what a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather should be. His positive attitude, loving kindness, sense of humor and humble nature were reflected in all that he did. Although he preferred to remain in the background, his whole family shined brighter because of him.

He is predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret King Hall; his daughter, Kathy Hall Nelson; his parents and his two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Huang Hall; his son, Glen D. Hall (Carol); his daughter, Vicki H. Daughdrill (Hal); son-in-law, Bob Nelson; grandchildren, Brian Hall (Elizabeth); Eric Hall (Christina); Andrea

Hall Leggett (Zack); Meg Daughdrill Flowers (Brian); Jim Daughdrill (Libby) and great-grandchildren: Caleb, Joshua, Daniel, Morgan, Matthew and Christopher Hall; Jackson and Laura Leggett; Grant and Stuart Flowers; James, Worth and Walter Daughdrill, and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving him is his former daughter-in-law Shellie (Sam) mother of Brian, Eric and Andrea.

A Celebration of Life service followed by a reception will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at The Buckingham, 8580 Woodway Drive, Houston, TX 77063.
