HCU holds off late Lamar rally

BEAUMONT — Justin Fomby threw three touchdown passes to Karl Reynolds, and Houston Christian held off

Lamar's late surge for a 37-34 victory on Saturday.

Fomby and Reynolds connected on scoring plays from 28, 40 and 3 yards, the last stretching the Huskies' lead to 37-7 with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter. Damashja Harris' 100-yard kickoff return was Lamar's only score in the first half.

Mike Chandler threw two touchdown passes to Devyn Gibbs on consecutiv­e drives to pull Lamar to 37-21 with 10:16 left. Chandler then capped long drives with scoring runs from 4 and 13 yards.

Brady Buell's 46-yard punt pinned the Cardinals at their own 6-yard line with 25 seconds left. The Cardinals made it to their 38 before the game ended with an incomplete pass.

Fomby was 31-of-45 passing for 249 yards for Houston Christian (2-2, 1-0 Southland). Reynolds had nine catches for 109 yards.

Chandler threw for 239 yards and added 45 yards rushing for Lamar (0-5, 0-2).

ALABAMA ST. 16 TEXAS SOUTHERN 13

Santo Dunn rushed for 101 yards, Ja'Won Howell scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, and the visiting Hornets (3-2, 1-1 Southwest Athletic Conference) rallied past the Tigers

(1-4, 1-2).

The Tigers were outgained 329-238 but built its lead on short touchdown runs by Jacorey Howard and Andrew Body. The Tigers had one possession after falling behind, but it ended on downs at the Alabama State 42.

At the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the Panthers (3-2) jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead and improved to 3-0 in the SWAC. Jaden Stewart and Ahmad Antoine scored on runs, and Xxavier Watson scored on a fumble return.

NORTH TEXAS 45 FLORIDA ATLANTIC 28

Austin Aune threw three touchdown passes to Jyaire Shorter in the first half to guide the host Mean Green (3-3, 2-0 Conference USA).

Florida Atlantic (2-4, 1-1) got within seven points at halftime after Teja Young picked off an Aune pass and returned it 64 yards for a score.

UTEP 41, CHARLOTTE 35

Gavin Hardison threw three touchdown passes, including two to Tyrin Smith, Tyrice Knight and Jadrian Taylor each returned a fumble for a score and the Miners (3-1, 1-1 C-USA) won in the Eastern time zone for the first time in program history (1-26-1).

UIW 48, MCNEESE 20

Lindsey Scott Jr. threw four touchdown passes and ran for three more for the host Cardinals

(4-1, 1-1).

Scott, a graduate transfer from Nicholls, had a pair of 7-yard touchdown runs in the first quarter to stake Incarnate Word to a 14-0 lead, and after McNeese answered with 10 second-quarter points, hit Taylor Grimes from 11 yards out for a 21-10 halftime lead.

JAMES MADISON 40 TEXAS STATE 13

Latrele Palmer ran for three touchdowns as the host Dukes (4-0, 2-0 Sun Belt) remained undefeated.

James Madison held the Bobcats (2-3, 0-1) to 246 yards.
