Boone clarifies comments on roof

- Matt Young

Astros fans had a good laugh when Aaron Boone said “I think the roof open kind of killed us,” after the Yankees lost Game 2 of the American League Championship Series to the Astros on Thursday at Minute Maid Park. Boone was speaking of Aaron Judge’s near-miss of a home run that Kyle Tucker caught right in front of the wall in the eighth inning.

Boone made the comment about the roof when a reporter asked him if he thought Judge’s ball, which had a 106 mph exit velocity and traveled 370 feet, had a chance to get out when he hit it. The wind was blowing out to left field and possibly knocking down balls hit to right a bit. Ironically, it’s usually Astros fans complaining about the roof as their team was just 1-4 in the postseason when the roof is open before Thursday’s game.

Boone’s postgame remarks drew mockery and memes in Houston, but Boone downplayed it before Saturday’s game.

“The comments I made, I just answered a question, I don’t know that I went in there commenting on something, I was just asked a question,” Boone said.

Temperatures at first pitch at Yankee Stadium are expected to be in the low-60s with low winds.

“Obviously, it will be a little chillier here, but it looks to be a nice day,” Boone said. “Winds are always a little bit different day in and day out here.”
