Cypress Woods opened the scoring with a defensive touchdown after John Jacobs stripped the ball from a Bears receiver and returned it for a score with 9:18 left in the first quarter.

After exchanging punts, Bridgeland (4-4, 3-2) put together a nineplay, 78-yard drive, capped by Reid Mikeska’s 12-yard touchdown pass from Hudson Pollard with 3:40 left in the first quarter.

Neither side scored in the second quarter.

Cypress Woods responded with a two-play scoring drive. Horton’s keeper began the drive, and a play later, Singletary scored his second touchdown, this one on a 69yard pass from Horton to make it 21-10 with 11:06 left in the game.

What it means

Cypress Woods is now tied for third place in 16-6A alongside Bridgeland and Langham Creek at 3-2. Cypress Ranch leads the standings at 4-1, and Cypress Falls is next at 3-1, pending Saturday night’s game against Cypress Springs, which sits at 2-2. The Bears are trying to make the playoffs for the fourth year in a row while the Wildcats are trying to reach them for a second straight season.

Quotable

“(District) 16-6A is a back-alley fight every single week, and you never know on any given night; everybody has a chance to beat anybody in this district so it’s really focusing on one week at a time,” Cypress Woods coach Cody Simper said. “We got Cy Springs next week — they’re a very good football team, and it’s going to be a very important game for us when it comes to qualifying for the playoffs.”

Singletary doubled his touchdown total for the season to four with his two scores in the second half against Bridgeland. He picked up about 90 yards on the scoring plays.
