STEVE F. MAFRIGE
01/17/1936 - 10/24/2022
Stevens Farris Mafrige, the son of Stevens Zachary and Marie Farris Mafrige, went to be with the Lord on Monday, the 24th October 2022, at the age of 86. He was devoted to his faith in God and family. He was humble, believed in being kind to others, and giving back.
He was born in San Antonio, Texas on the 17th of January 1936. He spent his early childhood in Houston, Texas. He later attended the San Marcos Baptist Academy starting at age 11 with his younger twin brothers, Ron and Don. There, he excelled in sports including football, baseball, track, and field. In 1953, he lettered in football and track, and was on the AllState football team. He was inducted into the Academy’s Athletic Hall of Fame in
2010.
Steve attended the University of Texas in Austin where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business and a Law Degree in 1960. While attending UT he was the intramural wrestling champion, a member of the Delta Theta Fraternity, and a member of ROTC. After graduation, he served eight years active and reserved duty in the Army, reaching the highest level of shooting, Expert, and was honorably discharged as a Captain. He then moved to Houston, where he started practicing law as a trial attorney and later established Law Firm Mafrige & Kormanik, P.C.
He was set up on a blind date by his brother Ron at a UT football game. From this, he met the love of his life, Carolyn Henry of Tilden, Texas. Their bond started at UT and led to 63 years of happy marriage.
In 1986 after the passing of Edna Henry, Steve’s motherin-law, Steve managed Y Bar Ranch located in Tilden. In the mid-1990’s, Steve retired from practicing law and started focusing more on ranching and investments.
Steve was a dedicated Longhorn fan and held season football tickets since 1960. He enjoyed giving back and mentoring others. He donated to many schools and charities including St Jude, St Constantine, St Paul, Rise School, M.D. Anderson,
San Marcos Academy, and many others. His passion was riding around the ranch looking at cattle with family and friends discussing Longhorn sports, the stock market, politics, various real estate projects, and planning family gatherings. Those topics stayed the same no matter where he was. He also enjoyed playing golf, traveling, hunting, and fishing all over the world.
Steve was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Ron and Ron’s wife Linda, and brother Gary. He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughter Melissa and her husband Michael Mithoff, and their children Mia, Max, and Mathew; son Steven J. and his wife Heather, and their children Steven H. and Kaitlyn; brother Don and his wife Nancy; sister Katheryn and her husband Tom. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from half-past four o’clock in the afternoon until half-past seven o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 1st of November, at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where the Trisagion Prayers are to commence at five o’clock in the Jasek Chapel.
A funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 2nd of November, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer, parlor and wine room.
Honored to serve as casket bearers during the services are David Mafrige, Rocky Mafrige, Zach Mafrige, Don Jr. Mafrige, John Mafrige, Huntley Kent, Michael Kent, and Jeb Wait.
Serving as honorary casket bearers are Don Mafrige, Tom Kent, Andrew Clark, and Richard Mithoff.
The interment will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
