Keep your LinkedIn profile updated
Q: I have been using LinkedIn lately to meet people in my industry and watch for job opportunities. The last time I updated my profile was when I conducted a job search several years ago. If everything has stayed the same with my background, should I take the time to rewrite it? I do not want to confuse my networking connections by changing things around.
A: Diligently using LinkedIn is an excellent way to update your skills and share updates with your connections. The same rule of thumb applies to your LinkedIn profile and when using your resume — your information needs to be updated. LinkedIn is a great career tool, and with 740-plus million members, your ability to attract new contacts and job opportunities is much greater.
Keeping your information current is wise and sends a positive perception that you are actively involved in managing your career. Even with the best intentions, losing track of your career accomplishments and letting your networking slide becomes easier over time.
One of the reasons why you need to update your LinkedIn profile is to stand out from the crowd. It is a good habit to update your profile often by adding new responsibilities, projects, training, and keywords.
Recruiters are often attracted to passive candidates, those that are currently working. However, your LinkedIn needs to be updated to remain a viable person of interest. Whether having the same job for years or needing a job search, adding new skills and contributions is essential.
Keep in mind that LinkedIn is driven by search engine optimization keywords that make it possible to find and search your background quickly.
You may miss out on some great connections if you overlook keywords throughout your LinkedIn profile.
Most experts agree that you need to include a photo to complete your LinkedIn profile. Your image helps make your content believable and adds a personal touch.
The headings or titles you use are essential in capturing attention. Do not limit yourself to just one title. Instead, you can use several to send a broader perception. View your heading as a quick snapshot of what you want others to know about you.
Writing your summary in the “About” section of your LinkedIn profile is often challenging for most people. Think of a good summary as a mixture of personality combined with your career philosophy, accomplishments, and skills that set you apart from others. In other words, what makes you unique?
