When Jackson arrived in 1977, he pushed the Yankees to the top for the first time since 1964, joining other notables such as Thurman Munson (until he died in a 1979 plane crash), Willie Randolph and Graig Nettles. Ron Guidry anchored the rotation, with Sparky Lyle (until he left in 1979) and Goose Gossage (upon arriving in 1978) the bullpen stalwarts.
