Texas Republicans again sweep statewide contests
Republicans on Tuesday swept Texas' statewide elections and preserved full control of state government, again denying Democrats their long-sought goal of flipping the state blue. With most votes tallied across the state, Gov. Greg Abbott and other statewide Republican candidates handily beat their Democratic challengers, while both chambers of the Legislature were set to remain under GOP majorities. The wave of Republican statewide wins extended a decades-long losing streak for Texas Democrats dating back to the 1990s, spanning seven midterms and seven presidential elections. The party last captured a statewide office in 1994.
