Tomball rallies in 16-15 upset

- Jason McDaniel

Tomball rallied from a 10-point deficit to hand New Caney it first loss of the season, 16-15, in an upset in the Class 6A Division II area playoffs Friday night at Planet Ford Stadium.

The win keeps the Cougars on track to defend their Region II championship – with a date with DeSoto up next in the regional semifinals. That game will be played at 3 p.m. Friday at Pflugerville Stadium.

Running back Christian Womack finished with 144 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries to lead the way for the Cougars (8-4).

“Our kids are resilient,” Tomball coach Dave Handal said. “They’ve been doing this all year. We preach that, and it’s a big part of our culture. We got down two scores early in the third quarter but they kept believing, kept trusting each other, kept playing hard, and found a way.”
