Boy critically hurt after being shot by child who found gun

-

A 5-year-old was shot and critically injured Saturday afternoon in Trinity Gardens when an 8-year-old got hold of a gun.

Houston police were still piecing together how the shooting happened around 12:20 p.m. in the 4900 block of Denmark, near Crosstimbers.

The boy was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition. His father first took him to Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, about a mile from the home, and later he was taken by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, police Cmdr. Jonathan Halliday told KHOU.

“We know there was at least one adult in the house,” Halliday said.

Three people were detained by police, but none had been arrested, he said. One of the children was visiting the home, and the two are family friends and not related.

Officials were still investigating and could not comment on how the older child gained possession of the firearm.
