Incarnate Word tops Furman, moves to FCS quarters
SAN ANTONIO — Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott threw for five scores to set the FCS single-season record with 62 total touchdowns, including a 32yard connection to Kole Wilson in the final two minutes, to lift No. 7 seed Incarnate Word to a 41-38 victory against Furman in the second round of the FCS playoffs Saturday at Benson Stadium.
Incarnate Word racked up 438 yards and 28 points in the first half against a Paladins’ defense that entered ranked sixth in the FCS allowing just 18.5 points per game, but the Cardinals went cold after halftime, scoring just six points across their first seven drives of the second half.
After Furman rallied to turn a 14-point deficit into a 38-34 fourth-quarter lead, Incarnate Word took possession at the Paladins’ 43-yard line with less than three minutes to play and scored in just 38 seconds on the connection from Scott to Wilson.
Furman drove to UIIncarnate Word’s 32-yard line in search of a gametying field goal before Elliott Davison snared an interception to secure the Cardinals’ victory.
Amid the possible distraction of Friday’s announcement that coach G.J. Kinne will be leaving to become the head coach at Texas
State, Incarnate Word advanced to the FCS quarterfinals for the first time in the program’s history and will face No. 2 seed Sacramento State.
Continuing a historic season in his first year at Incarnate Word, Scott completed 33 of 49 passes for 394 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions.
He also ran for a season-high 124 yards on 23 carries.
For the season, Scott has 55 passing touchdowns and seven rushing scores, breaking the record of 61 set by Willie Totten of Mississippi Valley State in 1984. Greg Luca
