HomeAid supports homeless community through Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive
United in their ongoing efforts to combat homelessness in our community, HomeAid Houston and the Greater Houston Builders Association are observing November Hunger & Homeless Awareness Month and Thanksgiving through a Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive.
In its fourth year, HomeAid Houston has met its goal of collecting all the trimmings for a Thanksgiving feast along with gift cards for perishable items yielding 200 food baskets — a record year.
The generosity of HomeAid supporters, members of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA), and a volunteer team from Howard Hughes Corporation translates into approximately 800-1,000 holiday meals to benefit three partner organizations in the greater Houston area — Angel Reach, Compassion United, and Fort Bend Women’s Center.
Executive Director of Angel Reach, Jean Radach said, “Angel Reach serves youth who have aged out of the foster care system at 18 and/or youth who are at risk for homelessness. About 30-40 youths per month come to us lost and alone without family or the support they so desperately need.
Providing a safe, warm home and a traditional Thanksgiving dinner means the world to these kids.
These meals will also be going to “next of Kin” families doing their best to keep kids out of foster care. These families need lots of support to grow and maintain the strength within the family unit.”
HomeAid Houston’s mission is to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education.
Through its core construction programs, HomeAid facilitates the construction/renovation of homeless shelters utilizing the pro bono construction resources of members of the Greater Houston Builders Association and its trades to save homeless service providers from 45%100% of construction costs.
