Homer Dane Grant, Jr. was born in Lubbock, Texas on the 23rd of June 1935, to parents Homer and Dorothy Grant, long time Lubbock residents. He passed away in Houston on Sunday, the 11th of December 2022. He was 87 years of age.
Dane graduated from Lubbock High School in 1953 and Texas Tech University in 1957 with a BBA in Finance. While at Texas Tech, he was the Business Manager of the LaVentana yearbook, and President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity in 1956. Dane was a Master Mason at Yellowhouse Lodge in Lubbock, member of the Texas Chapter and Council, a 32 degree Mason, and a Shriner. Dane was on the Board of the Texas Tech Ex Students, the Lubbock Symphony, American Red Cross and United Fund.
Dane was active in the South Plains Council of Boy Scouts of America, as well as his church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Dane was employed from 1957 to 1964 by the Lubbock National Bank part-time while in school and full-time after graduation.
Dane moved to Dallas in 1964 where he was to become Senior Vice President of the National Bank of Commerce. He served as President of the Dallas Red Raiders
Club and was instrumental (along with Wayne James) in obtaining the first major gift to Texas Tech’s Law School from the Wynne family of Dallas (American Liberty Oil Company). Dane additionally served as Advisory Director to several Dallas area banks and Medical Center National Bank of Houston.
In 1970, Dane moved to Houston and became President of First Bank after he and an investor group purchased the bank. Then in 1973, Dane and investors purchased Dallas International Bank, where he briefly served as CEO and Director. Around this time, Dane was appointed as a Director for Texas Independent Bank’s School of Banking at Texas Tech. In 1974, Dane sold his interests and joined the First State Bank and Trust of Houston. He served as CEO of this bank, merging it with Interfirst Corporation in 1980.
In 1988, Dane resigned from Interfirst and acquired an interest in a distressed bank and changed the name to Lone Star Bank, engineered two stock offerings, and opened multiple Houston offices. Lone Star Bank was acquired by Sterling Bank in 2001. Dane served as Vice Chairman of Sterling Bank and sat on the Executive Committee. In 2002, Dane was honored by the Texas Bankers Association for 50 years of service in the banking industry. He retired in 2005.
Dane returned to banking in 2007 when he joined Crosby State Bank as Vice Chairman, staying until 2014 after the merger with Community Bank of Texas. He was active in Red Raider Club activities and served on the Advisory Board to Rawls School of Business at Texas Tech.
Dane was a Life Member of the 100 Club, and Life Member of the Houston Rodeo Association. He was an active Rotarian for almost 40 years in the North Shore Rotary Club. He served as Chairman of the North Channel Chamber of Commerce, and President of Houston
Red Raiders Club. Dane was a long time member of the “C” Club of Houston, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, and the Houston Symphony.
Dane and his wife, Pam travelled extensively and had a wide circle of friends. They purchased a mountain cabin in 2001 in Durango, Colorado where they spent many happy years.
Dane is survived by his loving wife, Pam; stepdaughter, Kathryn Mahoney and her husband Michael of Kansas City, Missouri; stepson, Collin O’Bier of Houston; grandchildren, Camryn Adele Mahoney and Owen Michael Mahoney. Dane is preceded in death by his daughter, Rachel and son, Jake.
A Memorial Service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 22nd of December, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Lisa Neilson is to officiate.
Serving as honorary pallbearers during the service are Gary Rule, Wayne Wetzel, Frank Nadolney, Ron Cradic and Ray Hankamer.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the near-by Bagby Parish Hall.
