The game of a lifetime: Golf can be enjoyed at any age

- By Jan Burns

Golf is one of the world’s most popular sports, and since Houston has more than 160 golf courses, that makes it a prime destination for golfers.

Players say they like the sport for different reasons. Most mention that it is challenging, and that they like playing it with their buddies.

Others say they like it because it can be played by people of all abilities and ages.

It requires moderate physical strength, so people can play it even when they get older. Also, the handicapping system used in golf levels the playing field for golfers. At times, golfers can have an amazing round that they will long remember.

“Occasionally, you can hit a golf shot just like a pro,” said senior golfer Don.

But golf can be frustrating at times for any level of player.

Golfers often look for tips from golf pros about new equipment that might make them play better. That’s always the goal.

“Success in golf is finding equilibrium, accepting the fact that it is a game of ups and downs and learning something every time you tee up,” said Tiger Woods in his book How I Play Golf.

Flexibility is key

As people age, their bodies often become less flexible. Health experts say to accept this, and simply try to be as fit and flexible as possible. Seniors often can’t hit the ball as far as they once did. Because of this, you may have to adjust your fundamentals and swing.

Golf is good exercise, and health experts say golf can help you stay fit, improve muscle tone and endurance, and lose fat.

It can be good for your health and heart, if you walk the course. The average length of a golf course is almost 3.5 miles.

Even if a golfer uses a cart, they still must get out and walk around to hit the golf balls. To avoid injuries, warm up before playing golf. Stretching is important. Also, use sunscreen and wear a hat to avoid overexposure to the sun.

Houston a golf haven

Drive in any direction from downtown, and you will find a variety of courses.

Go to VisitHouston (www.visithoustontexas.com/things-to-do/golf-courses/) to find information about the top 12 golf courses in the greater Houston area.

Golfers may play at different courses occasionally, but usually play the most at their home course.

They can become familiar with its layout and learn how to best play it.

“My favorite course is my home course, because it’s only five minutes from home,” said Don.

Everyone can enjoy the game

One of the attractions of golfing is that different generations can enjoy it together. If one family member golfs, chances are others in the family will golf, too.

“My dad made me start playing at age 5, and I’ve been playing ever since,” said senior golfer Paul.

Golfers say that playing golf helps to relieve stress. This could be because of the physical activity and the pleasant natural environment. Many say they enjoy being outside, close to nature, often in beautifully landscaped surroundings.

Some people say that golf is like life in that you never know for sure what to expect when you step onto a golf course. One day you’re good, and the next day you aren’t.

They say that’s what makes them want to keep golfing. It’s a game you can play all your life.
