Doris Marie Dyson went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 28, 2022, in Houston, Texas.

Doris was born in New Waverly, Texas on November 3, 1927 to A. V. and Jimmie Durdin. Her parents moved to the Houston Heights when Doris was three years old.

She attended HISD schools, graduating from Sam Houston High School in 1944, where she was Lt. of the Flag Detail in the Black Battalion. She attended Massey Business College, Houston Conservato­ry of Music and University of Houston. She graduated with honors with an Associate of Arts from Houston Community College and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Doris worked for 25 years as a Medical Secretary and Doctor’s Assistant. After that, she moved to the constructi­on field, working for 12 years with Spaw-Glass, Inc., retiring in 1981. She held many offices in The National Associatio­n of Women in Constructi­on, including President of the Houston chapter.

Doris was a long-time member of West End Baptist Church in Houston, where she was a Bible class teacher and a member of the choir. She also was a member of Houston’s First Baptist Church for 41 years, where she served on the Missions Council and was involved in various mission activities, including teaching ESL. She loved traveling, but especially enjoyed the many mission trips she made with Houston’s First. She also had a great love for writing and painting.

On January 14, 1950, Doris married Jack Dyson at West End Baptist Church. They had three children -- one born in each of the three cities where they lived during their 64 years of marriage: Midland

(Debbie), Los Angeles (Jacque) and Houston (Brad).

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Durdin; brother, Vernon Lee Durdin; husband, Jack Dyson; son-in-law, Wayne Killingswo­rth; grandson, Ray Killingswo­rth; and greatgrand­son, Jack Dyson. She is survived by her children: Debbie Duke and husband Roy, Jacque Killingswo­rth, and Jack (Brad) Dyson and wife Pam; grandchild­ren: Mario (Bubba) Tamez and wife Claudine, Joseph Dyson and wife Angie, Marcus Tamez and wife Beth, Crystal Newson and husband Jeremy, Dena Norton and husband Rick, Amber Haynes and husband Heath, and Joshua Dyson and wife Julie; greatgrand­children: Isabella and Marcella Tamez, Hayden and Kayleigh Dyson, Grayson and Merritt Tamez, Grace Marie, Duke and Marian Newsom, Ellie and Ricky Norton, Gavin and Brooklyn Haynes, and Deacon, Noelle, Daisy and Lucy Dyson; sister: Mary Durdin Bird; sisterin-law, Jeanette Whitfield; brothers-in-law, Raymond Cantwell and Larry Cantwell; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Doris’s family wants to express their deep gratitude for the wonderful care given by the nurses and caregivers at The Forum Assisted Living for the past three and a half years.

A memorial service will be held at Houston’s First Baptist Church on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception for family and friends.
