Lone Star College’s chancellor says he will retire this summer

- By Samantha Ketterer

Lone Star College Chancellor Stephen Head on Tuesday announced his retirement after almost 40 years at the higher education system.

Head will leave his position Aug. 1.

“My reasons for making the announcement at this time are straightforward,” he said.

“I want to give the LSCS board of trustees plenty of time for a search and selection of the new chancellor. I am very proud of what we have accomplished and have watched the college evolve into one of the premier community colleges in the country.”

Head is the college system’s fourth chancellor. Since he took the post in 2014, he opened a new campus in north Houston as well as an online-only campus — and he oversaw steady enrollment despite declines across the country. More than 85,000 students attend courses across the school’s eight locations.

“Dr. Head’s legacy will be felt for generations to come,” said Michael Stoma, LSCS board chair. “I feel honored to work alongside him helping students, professors, staff and the community it serves.”

Head, a historian, joined Lone Star in 1984 and has held numerous positions at the Houston area’s largest community college system. He began teaching classes at the school and eventually became a high-level administrator, including at various points as executive vice chancellor and president at three campuses.

“Serving eight years as chancellor at Lone Star College is without a doubt the most rewarding job I have ever had,” Head said.

The Lone Star College System board will begin conducting a search for a new chancellor, led by a committee and a search consultant.
