Some solutions for a computer are as easy as removing what ails it

Q. My Zoom application keeps freezing. I traced the problem to my webcam. If I use a different camera, I have no problems. I tried updating the drivers, but they are up to date. Is my camera kaput?

A. Your camera may be defective, but there’s also a chance that you just have a corrupted driver.

I would try this: Open the Device Manager and look for your camera in the list of devices. Once you find it, delete it and reboot the computer.

When Windows boots up, it will detect the camera and reinstall the drivers.

This solution has fixed many problematic USB devices for me.

Q. Whenever I click on a link in an email message in Outlook, I get an error message that says, “Your organization’s policies are preventing us from completing this action for you. For more info, please contact your help desk.” This is a personal computer, so I don’t have a help desk. Can you help me?

A. Many programs work with each other and in conjunction with your operating system.

This is why when you click on a Word document, Word will open up. The same for things such as PDF files opening Adobe and image files opening your image viewing program.

Your computer knows how to do this because files are associated with a relevant and specific application.

This same thing controls how your computer reacts when you click on a link in an email message.

Basically, what happens is Outlook shows you a message with a link that you click on. Outlook communicates with your operating system to determine what to do. In this case, the operating system should respond by opening your default web browser.

When you get an error like this, it usually means the default web browser is not registered correctly or there is some other underlying problem with your browser’s integration with your operating system.

The easiest fix I have found is to simply uninstall the browser you usually use and reinstall it.

Of course, this works only for Chrome and Firefox. If you are using Microsoft Edge, it’s not easily uninstalled. If you prefer Edge, you’ll need to try installing a different browser, which will set itself as your default. If you want to go back to Edge, just click on Start and type Default Apps and hit Enter. Here you can choose the browser you want. Once you go through all of this, you should be able to open links in your email.
