CUVs, SUVs remain a big hit with drivers

Sport utility vehicles and crossovers vary in size and cost, but there’s no question they are big with consumers: according to Kelley Blue Book, in the U.S., of the 25 top-selling vehicles sold in the third quarter 2022, 13 were SUVs or crossovers, six were pickups and six were cars.

In addition to a front-end makeover, the 2023 Ford Escape is offered in a new ST-Line series with a 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder that delivers 180 horsepower with either front-wheel or available all-wheel drive. Other powertrain options: a hybrid with front-wheel drive; a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four that makes 250 horsepower; and a plug-in hybrid.

The 2024 Chevy Trax is expected in dealership­s this spring and comes in five trims. The Trax will feature a turbocharg­ed 1.2-liter engine that makes 137 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque.

When Kia’s 2024 Seltos arrives in spring, the small SUV will be available in a new X-Line trim that’s meant to convey ruggedness thanks to 18-inch wheels, a trim-specific grille design and special badging. Dual 10.25-in. panoramic displays are optional. There’s even a power liftgate offered with the SX sunroof package. All-wheel-drive is available.

One of the most venerable SUVs is the Toyota 4Runner. For 2023, there’s a 40th anniversar­y edition. Based on the SR5 Premium, the commemorat­ive 4Runners are only available in 4WD and offered in white, midnight black metallic or Barcelona red metallic. They’ll have 17-inch bronze-finished alloy wheels, a body-color Toyota heritage grille and retro-inspired graphics. There’s also special seat stitching, floor mats and a standard power moonroof.

For 2023, Toyota’s Highlander gets a new standard 2.4-liter turbocharg­ed four-cylinder engine that puts out 265 horsepower and

310 lb.-ft. — more torque than the previous V6. Fuel efficiency is 22/29 city/highway mpg.

Subaru gave its Ascent three-row SUV a facelift for 2023. In addition to its bolder front fascia and grille, the Ascent uses redesigned LED headlights and its standard multimedia system incorporat­es an 11.6-in. display. New for 2023 is the sevenpasse­nger Onyx Edition Limited.

Jeep’s Grand Wagoneer gets a new engine lineup for 2023. The eight-passenger SUV comes with a 6.4-liter V8, rated at 471 horsepower and 455 lb.-ft. of torque. Series II and Series II versions get a new twinturbo charged 3.0-liter inline six that produces 510 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque.
