Beyoncé, Lizzo among Houston’s Grammy hopes

- By Joey Guerra

“I’m her, her, her,” Megan Thee Stallion declares in a recent single. “She, she, she.”

It’s an assertion of her urgency and importance. But she could be talking about another Houston superstar: Beyoncé.

The Third Ward native is everywhere and everything. Her “Renaissance” album is still going strong, and single “Cuff It” is a top 20 hit. She made headlines (good and bad) with a private performance last month in Dubai. The just-announced Renaissance World Tour already has fans considering a second job or mortgage.

Most immediate is Sunday’s Grammys. “Renaissance” earned Beyoncé 10 nominations and could finally give her a much-deserved album of the year win. But she’s not the only Houston act who could snag an award.

Here’s a look at who could rep H-Town on the big stage. Beyoncé

10

Categories: Album, record and song of the year; dance/electronic recording and dance/ electronic music album; song written for visual media; R&B and traditional R&B performance; R&B song; remixed recording Will she win?

Beyoncé seems a lock for the R&B categories and has a strong chance for the dance awards. She has much stiffer competition for record and song of the year, including Harry Styles and Adele. But if “Renaissance” doesn’t win album of the year, the Beyhive will revolt. Lizzo From: Houston, where she attended Elsik High School, University of Houston and nurtured her love for hip-hop

Total nominations: Six

Categories: Album, record and song of the year; dance/electronic recording; pop vocal album and solo performance

Will she win? Lizzo has a good shot at record and song of the year for the inescapable “About Damn Time.”

Tobe Nwigwe

From: SWAT — Southwest Alief Texas

Category: Best new artist

Will he win? The win is in the nomination for the effervescent Nwigwe, who is up against Anitta, Omar Apollo and Måneskin.

Robert Glasper

From: Houston Total nominations: One

Category: R&B album for “Black Radio III”

Will he win? Glasper has previously won in this category and is a Grammy favorite. But his big competition is Mary J. Bige’s “Good Morning Gorgeous,” also up for album of the year.

Lyle Lovett

From: Houston Total nominations: One

Category: Americana performance for “There You Go Again” with Asleep at the Wheel

Will he win? Lovett hasn’t won a Grammy since 1997; Asleep at the Wheel since 2001. They’re also up against Brandi Carlile and Bonnie Raitt.

Cody Johnson

Total nominations: One

Will he win? Like Nwigwe, the nomination is a win in itself for Johnson, who just a few years ago was a strictly regional act. Now he’s playing RodeoHouston and getting nominated for Grammys.
