How to access and change your default PDF reader

-

Q: Whenever I download a PDF from my web browser it doesn’t open up in Adobe Reader as I would like. Instead, it opens up in Google Chrome like a webpage. How can I change this so that the PDF files open in Adobe Reader?

A:

PDF files can be managed by a number of different applications, including Google Chrome.

Chrome seems to like to take over the viewing of PDF files when downloaded using that browser, and the switch that turns this on or off is buried deep in the settings.

The quickest way to access these settings is to type chrome://settings/content/ pdfDocuments into the address bar, just as you would any other web address, and then hitting enter.

This will bring up the settings menu for how Google Chrome handles PDF files, and

you can toggle between downloading them or opening them in Chrome.

Once you change that, you

can download PDF files and have them either just save to your hard drive or save and automatically open in Adobe

Reader.

If they do not open automatically after downloading you can click the little up arrow next to the PDF files and select Always Open Files of This Type.

Q: Recently I went on a cruise out of the States during which I had no use of my phone. I did get limited access in some locations, but not always. Now that I am back in the USA my text messages show the wrong time for the responses, like six to seven hours off. Does any of this make sense? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

A:

Mobile devices, as well as laptops, are usually pretty good about keeping track of the time zone and will adjust as you cross from one to another. But sometimes they just don’t do this correctly.

It sounds like your phone’s date and time settings are stuck in the wrong time zone. This likely happened when you had service while travelling abroad and the phone did not correct this when you got home.

There should be a setting on your phone that allows you to configure the date and time settings. Look for an option to set the time zone to automatic and it should correct the problem.
