Our beloved Patrick “Pat” Babin Collins, (94), of Houston, Texas, passed away on March 14, 2023, in Plano, Texas. A loving father, grandfathe­r, uncle, mentor, and friend, he generously gave of his time to everyone around him.

A native Houstonian, Pat was born on November 4, 1928, to Elmo and Germaine Collins. He attended St. Thomas High School and then received his BBA from University of Houston in 1951, and his Masters in 1958 from The University of Texas at Austin. He attained his CPA credential in 1956.

Pat served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1953, and then began his career in Houston with Arthur Young. He moved to Hurley C. Roberson & Company in 1965, and then to Coopers and Lybrand (Pricewater­houseCoope­rs) in 1967, where he retired as a partner.

Pat married Julia “Jo” Rhodes Collins on May 16, 1959, and they were married for 42 years until her death in 2001. Pat and Jo have four children: Julia, Vance, Martha, and Robert.

After retirement, Pat served in several capacities including on the Audit/Finance Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and on the boards of The 100 Club of Houston, HCC Insurance Holdings, and Lakeside Country Club. He is also a past president of the Houston CPA Society, and member of the Texas Society of CPAs and American Institute of CPAs. Pat loved watching University of Houston cougar football and basketball. He also loved the game of golf and was able to play at some of the world’s best courses.

Pat truly made an impact on the lives of countless people. He was a loyal friend, admired and respected by all. Even at 94, he ran into people he knew wherever he went. Pat had an incredible zest for life. He cared about the details of his family and friends to the very end. He had a strong Catholic faith, which carried him throughout his life. While the world has lost a great man, heaven has welcomed him home.

Pat was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Elmo “Buddy” Collins, Jr., sister Marietta Davis, his wife Jo, his daughter Martha Collins Sampeck, and son Robert Collins.

He is survived by his older sister Margaret Turner of San Antonio, younger brother Tom Collins and sister-in-law Lois of Houston, and younger sister Carol James of San Antonio. He is also survived by his daughter Julia (Collins) Shanklin and son-in-law Brad Shanklin of Plano, son Vance Collins and daughter-in-law Ruth (Papa) Collins of Houston, grandchild­ren Rachel Sampeck of Plano, Natalie (Shanklin) Knight and her husband Zach Knight of Richardson, Connor Shanklin of Salt Lake City, UT, Michael Sampeck and his wife Suzi (Bass) Sampeck of Plano, Josh Collins of Houston, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Rosary will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at 5:30 PM, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, in Houston. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 31st, at 10:30 am at St. John Vianney, followed by a celebratio­n of Pat’s life at Lakeside Country Club.
