-

Marjorie Ann Cook Hutcheson was born on November 19, 1948 in San Antonio, Texas. She passed away surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

Marjorie graduated from Alamo Heights High School and then attended Stephens College in Missouri. She was elected and served as president of the student body at Stephens College. After two years in Missouri, Marjorie transferred to the University of Texas in Austin, where she pledged Tri Delta sorority and elected president of her pledge class. She earned her BA from UT, with a major in Spanish and a minor in Government. After teaching for a year in San Antonio, she moved to Houston. There, Marjorie met her husband Palmer on a blind date, and it was love at first sight for Palmer.

In addition to being a devoted and loving mother, Marjorie has always been selfless. She was an active member of the Garden Club of Houston, The Assembly, the Junior League of Houston, and many other philanthropic organizations. She loved playing Mahjong and Canasta. She always had a positive attitude and lived with grace.

Marjorie and Palmer have attended St. John’s Church for over 40 years. Marjorie was an active Church member; she taught Bible Study, served on the altar guild, and was a part of the Episcopal Church Women. She has always had strong faith and trusted in God’s Words.

Five years ago, when Marjorie first was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, she was determined to make sure her grandchildren knew her and how much she loved them. When faced with her illness, Marjorie never once complained; instead, she demonstrated her bravery with courage, perseverance, acceptance, and faith.

While raising a young family, Marjorie worked for Fannin Bank. As her children grew, she became active in the Neuhaus Education Center through the encouragement of Lenox Reed and the Neuhaus family. She became a Certified Academic Language Therapist and taught her students to be successful proficient readers for 10 years. She served on the Board of Trustees for over 20 years, including as Chair of the Board and Lifetime Trustee. Marjorie and Palmer were honored at the 2023 Literacy Lights the Way Luncheon.

Marjorie is preceded in death by her mother Marcia Megowen Cook, her father John Winston Cook and her stepmother Bette Ruth Williams Cook. She is survived by her brother Frank Tyson Cook (Beryl) of Chicago and sister Nancy Cook Monroe (Mike) of San Antonio.

Marjorie is survived by her husband Palmer, daughter Nancy Dolan (Vince) of Austin, son JP Hutcheson (Lillie) of Houston, and daughter Caroline Bryan (Cory) of Houston. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Lyles Elizabeth Hutcheson, John Palmer Hutcheson

III, and Elizabeth Palmer Bryan of Houston, and Owen Patrick Carrington Dolan of Austin as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Marjorie dearly loved her children, their spouses and especially her grandchildren. She reached her goal of living long enough after being diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma that they would always remember her as a doting and loving grandmother.

The family of Marjorie Hutcheson wishes to extend our sincere thanks to her numerous doctors and nurses at both MD Anderson and Methodist Hospital, as well as the caregivers from Houston Hospice and Homewatch Caregivers of Houston Galleria.

A celebration of life will be held at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard on Thursday the 6th of July at 11:00 AM followed by a reception for family and friends. If desired, memorials may be directed to Neuhaus Education Center, The Houston Council on Recovery or, St. John the Divine Episcopal Church.
