Verlander, big bats power Mets to win

NEW YORK — Justin Verlander pitched seven innings for his first victory in nearly six weeks and rookie Francisco Álvarez shook off his recent struggles and hit the first of three quick homers to lift the New York Mets over the San Francisco Giants 4-1.

Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor launched back-to-back shots as the Mets went deep three times in a span of four batters against Anthony DeSclafani (4-8).

The 40-year-old Verlander (3-4) gave up five hits, struck out six and didn’t allow an earned run for his 248th victory and first since May 21 against Cleveland.

Padres 12, Reds 5: Juan Soto hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning as San Diego beat host Cincinnati.

Phillies 19, Nationals 4: Alec Bohm tallied six RBIs as Philadelph­ia beat visiting Washington.

Twins 1, Orioles 0: Bailey Ober allowed two hits in seven innings as visiting Minnesota beat Baltimore.

Mariners 3, Rays 2: J.P. Crawford drove in a pair of runs as host Seattle toppled Tampa Bay.

Diamondbac­ks 3, Angels 1: Ryne Nelson limited Los Angeles to three hits and one earned run in 7 1⁄3 innings in Arizona’s road win.

Yankees, Cardinals split: Paul Goldschmid­t hit a three-run homer to lead host St. Louis over New York 11-4 in the opener of a doublehead­er. In the second game, Harrison Bader had a first-inning sacrifice fly in his return to St. Louis as New York won 6-2.

Royals 6, Dodgers 4: Host Kansas City welcomed Los Angeles’ Julio Urías back from the injured list by scoring five times in the first inning en route to a win.

Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6: Rafael Devers hit his 20th home run as visiting Boston held on to beat Toronto.

Braves 7, Marlins 0: Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies homered as Atlanta topped host Miami.

Brewers 11, Pirates 8: Corbin Burnes carried a perfect game into the sixth inning as visiting Milwaukee survived a late rally to beat Pittsburgh.

Tigers 4, Rockies 2 (10): Zach McKinstry’s threerun homer in the 10th lifted Detroit over host Colorado.

Athletics 7, White Sox 6 (10): Tyler Wade scored the winning run after a misplayed grounder, giving Oakland a victory over visiting Chicago.
