JANET BUMP

06/18/1937 - 06/22/2023

-

Janet (Jan) Spalding Bump went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2023, just a few days after her 86th birthday. She was reunited with her loving husband Dan, who preceded her in death in 2013 after 52 wonderful years of marriage. A private graveside service for family was held at Woodlawn Funeral Home on Friday, July 14, 2023 followed by a family dinner in celebration of her life.

Janet (Jan) was born in Evansville, IN on June 18, 1937 to the late Rose and Leonard Spalding. She graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville in 1955. As a concert pianist, she attended Barat College of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Illinois on a fine arts scholarship for one year before returning to Evansville to work. She met the love of her life, the late Charles Daniel Bump (C. Dan) on a blind date when he was working in Evansville with Kewanee Oil Company. C. Dan and Jan married 6 months after their first date and soon thereafter the oil industry took them to Lafayette, LA where their three children were born. Jan continued to visit Evansville throughout her life and stayed close to her family and many lifelong friends there. The Bump Family made one final move to Houston, TX in 1972 after living in Lake Charles, LA for one year.

Jan was a fun, loving and devoted mother to her three children. Her upbeat and engaging personality made her home a hangout spot.

She and C. Dan hosted parties often; most notable was their infamous New Year’s Day Party. She loved college football and would play the various team fight songs on the piano for guests while they enjoyed her dirty rice and rum punch. She always volunteered in her kids’ school, church and neighborhood activities. Mom could do it all!

As incredibly loving and supportive Jan was as a mom, it was no surprise that she excelled as a grandmother. “Ginnie” as she was affectionately known had more energy that all 13 of her grands combined. She had a unique bond with each of them and proudly supported their many endeavors whether it was dance, music, theater, cheer or team sports. She and C. Dan planned their schedules around grandsons’ baseball, basketball or football games and granddaughters’ dance recitals or volleyball games. She was abundantly generous with her time, resources and love for her grandchildren.

Jan was very social and quite athletic, and she kept a packed weekly schedule of hobbies. She bowled in leagues and national tournaments all of her life up into her 80’s. Jan started playing tennis when the family moved to Houston and joined Westside Tennis Club where she was a member for 40+ years. Jan also played bridge and was an avid reader. Deep friendships were developed from these activities, and she was well-loved and admired.

Jan was a devoted Catholic her entire life. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband Dan, her parents Rose and Leonard Spalding, her brother Bud Spalding and sisters-inlaw Linda Bump and Judy Schneider. She is survived by her children Juli Vaughan (Richard) of Houston, Danny Bump (Kim) of Spicewood, TX, and David Bump (Heather) of Spring. Her grandchildren are Blake (Ruthie), Matthew (Christina) and Michael Vaughan, Amanda (fiancé Connor Bradley) and Allison Bump, Ryan (Laura), Kyle, Taylor, Jaxson and Noelle Bump, Shannon (fiancé Matthew Gilbert) and Avery Elliott, and Tara Karlinksi; Greatgrandchildren are: Tatum, Cohen and Annie Vaughan and a Bump girl due any day. Surviving siblings include Don Spalding (Susan) and sister, Gayle Spalding. She is also survived by her husband’s siblings who she loved like her own family; Larry Bump (Carol), Mary Ellen Harding,

The family extends sincere gratitude to the incredible staff at The Forum at Memorial Woods Memory Care who have lovingly cared for mom for over three years. In addition, we would also like to thank the team at Crossroads Hospice.

Jan and Dan generously supported many charities and organizations. In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that remembrances be made in memory of Jan Bump to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital or the charity of your choice.
