CONSTANCE BREWER KOOMEY

03/11/1928 - 06/14/2023

-

Constance Brewer “Connie” Koomey, of Houston, peacefully passed away in her home on Wednesday, the 14th of June 2023. She was 95 years of age.

Connie was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, on the 11th of March 1928, to Charles Raymond and Nell Brewer. She graduated from Frances Shimer Preparatory School and Junior College. She attended Michigan State University and received her R.N. from Lilly Jolly School of Nursing.

It was in Houston, Texas where she met the love of her life, Paul Koomey, on a blind date. He took one look at her and knew she was the one. They kissed on their first date in front of Crown Central Service Station on Shepherd. Connie’s parents came to Houston to meet

Paul and they went to the San Jacinto Inn where it was all you could eat for $3.00. Her father asked Paul if he would ever amount to anything, and sure enough, he did. They were married on the 30th of August 1952 in Battle Creek. Shortly after their honeymoon, they moved to Denver where Paul was in the service. It was there that Connie worked in a psychiatric hospital as a nurse. Eventually they made it back to Houston where Paul worked for C. Jim Stewart and Stevenson and Connie continued her nursing career at Memorial Herman.

Connie and Paul had two precious daughters, Carol Ann and Kathryn Elizabeth. Carol and Kathy were the love of her life, and she supported them in all they did. Connie was a room mother, and a Bluebird and Camp Fire Girl leader. She was a docent for The Heritage Society, a member of P.E.O., The Tanglewood Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and The Fellowship Class at First Presbyterian Church.

She was an excellent cook, and she collected many cookbooks. She never passed up a good bargain; she traveled extensively, and hosted many people from countries all around the world. She was the ultimate homemaker. She was a wonderful mother, wife, and friend.

She was predeceased by her loving mother and father; her sisters, Barbara and Eleanor; her brother-in-law, Winston Koomey; and her best friend, Becky Gahm. She leaves behind her most devoted and loving husband, Paul; her daughters, Carol Walls and her husband Cooper, Kathy Cire and her husband Buck; her adoring grandsons, Matt Cire and his wife Ansley, and George Cire; three beautiful great granddaughters, Elizabeth Gray, Margaret Louise, and Kathryn Scott “Scottie” Cire; brother-in-law, Calvin Koomey; and dear family friend Doretha Branch.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to her loving caregivers who we consider family: Tyra Gregory, Pinkey Williams, Ebony Lyons, Zainab Ibitoye, and Feyisara Adenuga.

A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 19th of July, in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street in Houston.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in honor of Connie be directed to Constance B. Koomey Professorship in Nursing at UTMB, UTMB Development Office, 301 University Blvd., Galveston, TX 77555-0148; to The Brookwood Community, 1752 FM 1489, Brookshire, TX 77423; to First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, Houston, TX 77004; or the charity of one’s choice.

Please visit Mrs. Koomey’s online memorial tribute at GeoHLewis.com where fond memories and words of comfort and condolence may be shared electronically with her family.

She will be greatly missed by her friends and family, especially her devoted husband of 70 years, who never left her side, kissed her every chance he could get, and always had a handkerchief handy to wipe away a tear.
