ELSIE RYAN

Elsie Martin Ryan, 93, got her wish on July 12, 2023: God brought her home. Elsie Joan Martin was born June 4, 1930 in New York City to Edward and Elsie Louisa (Dennis) Martin and grew up in the Bronx and Queens; after high school she began to make her own way in the world in downtown Manhattan, most famously as a buyer for J.J. Newberry.

She left that world for motherhood and the many family moves required of the wife of a salesman, but after 20 years she returned to business in a variety of professions in Houston, finally serving as business manager for the Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center for 15 years.

Elsie is predeceased by her parents; her husband, Martin; one granddaughter and two great-granddaughters. She is survived by her children, Patrick (Frances), Daniel (Terri), Edward (Carolyn), Kathleen (Van) Sandler, and Kevin (Dianne); 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren (#15 next month!); her cousins and sister-in-law, seven nieces and nephews, and friends so numerous and dear.

A wake and rosary will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Chapel, 7723 Beechnut, Houston, TX 77074. A Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1801 Sage, Houston, TX 77056 with interment to follow at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.
