HCU can’t stop Nicholls’ outburst

THIBODEAUX, La. — Nicholls scored 24 points in the third quarter to rout Houston Christian 38-7 on Saturday.

The Colonels (2-3, 2-0 Southland) scored first when Pat McQuaide found David Johnson Jr. for a 14-yard touchdown.

Houston Christian (2-4, 1-2) struck back when Colby Suits threw a 2yard pass to Darryle Evans.

But the afternoon belonged to Collin Guggenheim, who scored four touchdowns on runs of 4, 5, 2 and 1 yards.

Suits finished with 170 passing yards but threw three intercepti­ons.

LAMAR 27 NORTHWESTE­RN STATE 13

Damashja Harris returned a first-half kickoff 95 yards for a score, Kyndon Fuselier recovered a fumble in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown and the host Cardinals (3-3, 2-0) pulled away.

NAVY 27, NORTH TEXAS 24

Alex Tecza ran for a pair of long touchdowns for the host Midshipmen (2-3, 1-2 American).

Tecza had a 39-yard scoring run in the second quarter, and his 21-yarder stretched the Navy lead to 27-17 with 7:07 to play.

The Mean Green (2-3, 0-1) got the ball back with just under two minutes left at their own 20 but couldn't pick up a first down.

LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 34 TEXAS STATE 30

Zeon Criss accounted for four touchdowns, including a 5-yard pass and an 8-yard run in the final six minutes, to lead the host Cajuns (4-2, 1-1 Sun Belt).

TJ Finley threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Joey Hobert to give Texas State (4-2, 1-1) a 30-21 lead with about 10 minutes remaining.

But Criss hit Jacob Bernard for a 21-yard gain on third-and-20 to keep alive an 11-play, 63-yard drive that culminated when Robert Williams caught a 5-yard touchdown pass with 5:54 left. Dalen Cambre blocked a punt that was returned 8 yards to the Bobcats 30 by Patrick Mensah, and four plays later, Criss' rushing touchdown gave Louisiana-Lafayette its first lead with 2:21 left.

UTSA 49, TEMPLE 34

Frank Harris threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead the Roadrunner­s (2-3, 1-0) to victory in their American Athletic Conference opener.

Harris completed 25 of 33 passes for 338 yards.

PRAIRIE VIEW 31 MISSISSIPP­I VALLEY ST. 12

Trazon Connley threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers (3-3, 3-1 SWAC), who led 17-3 at halftime.

SOUTHERN UTAH 27 TARLETON STATE 26

In Stephenvil­le, the Texans (4-2, 1-1) led 20-0 at halftime, but the Thunderbir­ds stormed back and sealed the game with a fumble return for a touchdown.

INCARNATE WORD 33 SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA 26

Zach Calzada accounted for three touchdowns (4-1, 1-0 Southland Conference) for the host Cardinals.

TEXAS A&M COMMERCE 41 MCNEESE 10

Josh Magana threw two touchdown passes, Ra'veion Hargrove added 96 yards rushing and a pair of scores for the host Lions (1-4, 1-0 Southland).

UTAH TECH 37 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 31

The visiting Lumberjack­s (3-2, 0-1) led 24-17 in the fourth quarter, but Utah State rallied with quick scores.
