Peter Otto Herbert, 87, of East Northport Long Island, passed away, surrounded by his loved ones on September 6, 2023 in Houston, Texas after a hard-fought battle with Alzheimer’s.

Peter was born on August 24, 1936 in Hempstead, Long Island, New York to Robert & Karen Herbert of Sea Cliff. The family later moved to

East Northport, New York where Peter was an active member of the First Presbyteri­an Church of Northport and grew up with his sister Susan.

An active Boy Scout, Peter represente­d his area council at the National Boy Scout Jamboree before graduating from Northport High School in 1954 where he was a member of the band and All State Choir. As an adult, he continued his involvemen­t with the Boy Scouts of America in Houston as a Scout Master and Adult Leadership Trainer for the San Houston Area Council.

Peter’s first loves were the sea and the sky. After high school, he attended the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticu­t where he sailed two Atlantic crossings aboard the sailing ship USCGC Eagle. He then joined the United States Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas where he earned his commercial pilot’s license. This led him to his lifelong career in the airline industry which in turn led him to his soul mate, Caroline Martinez Herbert.

Peter and Cari met while both were working at Pan American Airways in Houston. They were married on June 25, 1960 and had three children.

An avid sailor, Peter participat­ed in offshore ocean racing as a crew member out of Newport, Rhode Island; Miami, Florida in the Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC); and Galveston,

Texas at the Houston Yacht Club (HYC).

Peter Otto Herbert is survived by his wife Caroline, son Robert G. Herbert III, daughter Carlie Sayre McClane (husband Keith); six grandchild­ren, Cari Ann, James, Jordan, Jack, Dixie, and Dashiell; two great grandchild­ren, Braxton and Raelynn; his sister Susan Samantha Herbert Brown; his sister-in-law Angel Cantu (husband Fred) and many generation­s of nieces and nephews.

Peter was preceded in passing by his parents, Robert Gaston Herbert Jr. and

Elsa Karen Herbert and his daughter, Kathryn Samantha Hammett.

Family and friends are invited to a celebratio­n of Peter’s life at Northwoods Presbyteri­an Church in Houston, Texas on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 11:00 AM. There will be visitation time after the service.

As this is a celebratio­n, the family asks for colors to be worn in lieu of traditiona­l black and that memorial donations be sent to the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n in remembranc­e of Peter O. Herbert.
