Uriel Edward Jones, 55, an 8th generation member of a pioneering Houston family, passed away at home in Houston, Texas on November 21, 2023. He was born in Corpus Christi, TX on October 28, 1968, to Uriel Hawe (“Paul”) Jones and Carmen Eleonora Quinonez. Edward, as he was commonly known, experienced life across the United States, eventually graduating High School in Kingwood, TX. Ed was very athletic, and was a mainstay of the Kingwood tennis team, as well as being an active soccer player. After graduation, he attended Rutgers University in New Jersey.

In growing up, Ed particularly enjoyed the outdoor environments of Alaska and California. He enjoyed hiking with his father behind their Thousand Oaks, California home in Wildwood Canyon Park, and cross-country skiing in Alaska. He had a love of hiking which translated in recent years to taking long walks in Terry Hershey Park and in the Memorial Thicket neighborhood where he lived.

As a personal assistant, he travelled overseas, living for 4 years in Qatar in the Middle East, and travelling extensively in the Middle

East, Europe, and Far East, including Australia. He also visited relatives in Colombia, South America. As a treasured and active member in his church of St. John Vianney, he travelled with them to Rome in 2017. Also in 2017, Ed helped rescue his parents during Hurricane Harvey. After Harvey and repairs to the flooded home, he was finally able to return to his beloved Memorial Thicket home, where he lived a total of 30 years. Edward enjoyed music, films, and books, especially history and fiction, and was a voracious reader with many books in his collection. Although Ed was plagued by poor health for many years, he remained active and persevered through it all without complaint or any thought of self-pity. He was inspirational to those who knew him and will be greatly missed. He was a friend to many and a stranger to none.

Edward was predeceased by his older sister Elizabeth Kathleen Jones, and is survived by his mother and father, his brother Stephen McAshan Jones, to whom he was especially close, Stephen’s wife Nathalie, and Stephen’s children, Sarah Leda Jones, Stephen Jones, Jr., Christian Alexander Jones, and Uriel Augustine Jones. He also leaves behind his uncle Hugh Scott, his aunt Beverly Floyd, his cousins, James Floyd, Aaron Floyd, and Stephen Floyd, Jr. and their children Ella, Jamie, and Corrine Floyd. In addition, he leaves behind many cousins, aunts, and uncles in Colombia.

Visitation will be at the Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Drive, from 6 PM until 8 PM on Tuesday, November 28, with a vigil service at 7 PM, followed by a mass at St. John Vianney Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, at 10:30 AM Wednesday, November 29. The interment will be at Glenwood Cemetery on Friday, December 1 at 1:00 PM.
