“It has been an honor to work with and for the best station group in the country. It’s simply time to rest.” Khambrel Marshall

Khambrel Marshall, the dapper bow-tie wearing meteorologist and anchor at KPRC 2, is retiring after 24 years at the station and nearly 50 years in the TV industry.

On Friday, he told viewers that he was saying goodbye to TV to focus on his family life with his wife of 43 years, three adult daughters and three grandchildren. His last day will be Dec. 13.

“It has been an honor to work with and for the best station group in the country. It’s simply time to rest,” Marshall, 70, said on KPRC 2’s website.

Marshall also hosts the station’s “Houston Newsmakers With Khambrel Marshall,” a program featuring conversations with community leaders about political and social issues impacting the city. He’s been part of the KPRC 2 news team since 1999 but was taken off air in 2005 after a change in management.

He did not let it deter him, moving behind the scenes as an executive producer while enrolling in the broadcast meteorology program at Mississippi State University. He returned to the station as a TV meteorologist in 2008.

A native of North Carolina, Marshall has been in front of the camera all of his adult life, but television wasn’t his first career choice. His mother and grandparents were educators, so he thought he was destined for the classroom. In high school, Marshall contemplated a military career. Instead, he enrolled in the ROTC and earned a scholarship to Arizona State University in Tempe.

“I decided to follow in my mother’s footsteps to study sociology. Then I discovered journalism allowed me to pursue ways to address social problems by exposing and reporting on them,” he told the Houston Chronicle in 2020.

Marshall is dedicated to the community and has served as chair of the YMCA of Greater Houston board.

In 2020, he was honored for his activism at the Mayor’s History Makers’ Award Luncheon. Marshall emceed the event and was surprised when his wife, Debbie Marshall, and daughter, Danielle Marshall of Louisville, Ky., attended the luncheon. They presented Marshall with the special honor.
