Army wins with goal-line stand
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Army linebacker Kalib Fortner scored on a fourth-quarter strip sack and then stuffed quarterback Tai Lavatai six inches from the goal line with 3 seconds left to help the Black Knights beat Navy 17-11 on Saturday and win the 124th meeting of the nation’s oldest service academies.
After falling behind 17-3, Lavatai led the Midshipmen to a touchdown to make it a one-score game and then drove them to the Army 6. With no timeouts and about 30 seconds left, Lavatai threw two incompletions before hitting Alex Tecza, who was tackled in bounds at the 2. Lavatai was stopped short on fourth down.
Sooners’ Gabriel heads to Oregon
Former Oklahoma and UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced he is transferring to Oregon for a sixth season of college football.
Gabriel lines up as Oregon’s replacement for Bo Nix, a Heisman finalist who spent the last two seasons with the Ducks.
The Ducks are transitioning from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten next season.
Two teams reach FCS semifinals
South Dakota State and North Dakota State both advanced in the FCS playoffs with quarterfinal wins on Saturday.
South Dakota State took down Villanova 23-12 while North Dakota State blasted South Dakota 45-17 as the two winners will join Montana and the winner of Albany/Idaho in the semifinals.
Daniels wins O’Brien award
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, named The Associated Press player of the year on Thursday, won the Davey O’Brien Award as the top quarterback in college football, and Payton Wilson of North Carolina State won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player on Friday.
Daniels led the nation’s best offense this season as the Tigers gained 4,946 yards in 12 games (412.2 per game). He passed for 3,812 yards and had 40 TDs passing.
